Mountain task with perfection/ exemplary output to any team/organization is always daunting. Our Velyannam (Giant swan) is one of the biggest examples of triumph to the giant task. I would rather relate it with multi-brewing a creation/product with highest perfection. Obviously the Neelamperoorians heart and soul is very much having a deep depth towards Velyannam.To make the velyannam (Giant Swan) in the best suited artistic perfection can be visualized through a practical assessment of the same.

The Highest quality of product is always produced with superb raw materials. Here the natural products are selected in a categorical manner for Velyannam (The Giant swan). This is of course a process of Multi management, Multi product analysation, Employees performance capability and its quality checking.

Padayani is a form of just art? Is it a form/way of expressing the fruitful enjoyment of hardship? Is it just a spiritual custom which is just been followed with natural artistic excellence embedded with rhythm because of historical precedence?.There are certain questions coming to my mind which can be bright full through certain facts which I have noticed. Creative culminations are customary ritual to the masses. But the hiding management system in this mechanism which is having a lively heart is delightful.

While assessing, feeling, experiencing Neelamperoor padayani , is a different state of mind which is making our life “More Meaningful. The ego erasing technology which is mixed-up with Man Management philosophy is at utmost perfection for these 16 days of beautiful/memorable days in Neelamperoor.
Collective effort without hue and cry which will see there in Administration to Public relations and HR management is a modern day case study which is a learning leaf for, even the corporates for creating /adopting the ‘Aura tool of Management’ to make the principle and steps to generate more value and quality output from the manpower.

Neelamperoor padayani has itsown field of positive effect in the localites which is a part of ritual/belief. The efforts which is taken into perfect utilisation is basically designed deeply at an early age of each and every Neelamperooreans. I think the man-hours maximum output and usage is categorically capitalised. The positive power extraction is managed with meticulous technique of Aura/divine. I think while relating to so many aspects of padayani will make a modern day book of good management which will be popular for corporate sectors. Our Energy utilisation co-related with ritual act is a combination of skill & Management.

I wish to do a detailed article on to it with a specific book designed for Neelamperoor Padayani & its micro management. Hope my “Neelamperoor Amma” (The divine mother of Neelamperoor) will bless me with lot of wisdom to proceed.

NEELAMPEROOR PADAYANI - Threats, Responsibilities and Hopes

It is serene silence well surrounded by thick darkness in our village at about 10pm on the very next day of Thiruvonam in the festive month of chingam (August- September as per English calendar) , A gathering of the village people , coinciding with the rising of a lighted choottu (a handful dry coconut leafs) rhythmically and joyously unites their voice to mark the beginning of padayani-
H –U- Y- Y- O- O- OH!!

Once this joyous outbreak marking the win of light over darkness is immersed in silence, there comes again the most meaningful prayer without uttering a word. One amongst the gathering first calls KOOO- KOOO and is followed by the rest. It is the prayer to the Goddess to protect and bless the society.

This is the drama of the first day of Padayani in Neelamperoor, Hectic activities follow the next 15 days in this Padayani gramam (Village).

The Padayani which comes in every year immediately following the onam, the national festival of God’s own country, is divided in to four stages. The first stage which is the repetition of what is described above is continued in four days. In the next four days there comes Kudakal (A form made in the structure of cone. The outer portion of the middle stem of coconut leaf is circularly bent and the beautiful red chethi flower hanged on it) when this stage comes to an end there is a padayani with function such as Kudambooja (An ancient form of dancing round campfire in the midst of signing of Purana tales) Thothakali ( An aerobolic dance in the form of moving and with the towels by the participants according to the thalam created by percussionists) All the kudas will be brought in front of the Goddess with the support of folk songs.

In the third stage effigies made out of Jack fruit leafs are the centre of attractions.Also this is the first stage in the padayani where human forms visits padayani ground. This stage stretches in to four days and ends with padayani called Plavila Nirthu.

The fourth and final stage is the high end drama where attractive forms are made using items available in the ecological system of the village. The skeleton is made up of normal softwoods, the inner portion of the form made of dry plantain leafs on the penultimate day which is known as Makom Padayani two little swans are brought in procession in the night.

Makom Padayani is famous for the Velakali, a function in which the traditional agricultural folk songs are blended with highest principles of life. It is very important to note here that the Makom nakshathra is a very holy occasion as far as the punja cultivation in the area is considered.

The Grand finale of the padayani is an occaccion for joining together of the entire Village.It is a joining place for people of different age , caste and culture . Padayani contain all these with in depth meaning. The entire village put in its effort from morning till night to complete the colouring art work of the swans and other forms. The outer skin is made using leaf of lotus and the glittering feathers are made using combination of inner soft layers of the plantain stem and chethi flowers. The plantain used for padayani are to be cut only after removing fruits from it, speaks volumes for the eco-friendliness of padayani.

Historians find it difficult to trace out the beginning of this great event. Some connection to the chera rulers with the temple is evident. It is true that before beginning the Padayani the temple administrators take the permission of both the Goddess as well as before the memorial of pallibana perumal- a chera ruler who spent his last days in the village .But arguments are here that Padayani existed even before chera days. The supporting points for the arguments are its similarly with other forms of Padayani in kerala.

Padayani is the festival which is to be identified with Mother Nature the ultimate form of our Goddess. Padayani is not having an existence separated from its Mother. Through this drama called padayani a message is conveyed to the society to shoulder the responsibility of protecting the Mother Nature, which if done will revert back to the humanity through blessings.

Neelamperoor is a village surrounded by punja paddy lands. The life styles prevalent here was conducive in conducting the festival that all the raw materials required were in abundant supply in the past. But as things turned around during last 3 decades or so Padayani is facing its threats form nature itself.

Increase in land value and urbanization is limiting supply of soft timber and other natural essentials. The temple administrators a firm steps to revive a punja land to plant lotus to ensure the availability of lotus leaf recently.

One advantage of the padayani is the strong bond of belief that the villages keep on Her Holiness Palli Bhagavathy even in the changed scenario. Surely it is to be used as means to revive the nature of the village so that the message of padayani is conveyed through generations to come. Yes the onus is on us to handover the torch (chootu) to the next generation safety which only will ensure the bliss of mother nature to its creatures including the human being..

What is PADAYANI??

Padayani,a great religious and cultural event of central Kerala celebrated in Aug/Sept period for 16 days at Neelamperoor,an enchanting village is now attracting tourists,artlovers and pilgrims not only from Kerala,but from all parts of India like ..Sabarimala, Guruvayur etc..this is an old Dravidian religious ritual,an offering to Mother Godess in the temple.The origin dates back to early Christian era,when there were only Kaali temples all over Kerala.The celebration in such temples was marked by ritual dance,mostly martial in nature with vigorous music produced by percussion instruments,the songs praising the battle Godess. Kalamezhuthu,Kavadiyattam, Kummattikali, Mudiyettu, Theyyam,Velakali etc are purely Dravidian in nature.

Padayani belongs to this ancient tradition.In the early period it was following shaktheya rituals .Later the influence of Budhism made it pure Sathwika. The whole of present day Kuttanad,Alapuzha and Pathanamthitta region ..on both sides of Pamba river had several Budhists Viharas till 8th Century AD.It is Budhists who introduced festivals,Arattu(bathing of the diety in holy waters, Naga worship etc .Later Palli Bana Perumal,the Chera Emperor who settled and died at Neelamperoor reformed Padayani and promoted Martial arts and Padayani.Padayani is now an offering to the Mother Godess Palliyil Bhagavathy ,his family diety brought from Perinnanam near Kodungallur,the Chera Capital city.All fine arts and art forms are blended harmoniously. Everything used here to make offerings like Big and small Swans( not shakethaya fowl or goats pl note).decorations.Temple elephant,the kolams (three dimensional effigies ) are made purely from materials collected fresh from nature like flowers leaves,and stems of arecanut.banana plants.coconut trees etc.Nothing artificial not even pigments are used.The dedicated cheerful selfsurrender service of hundreds of villagers day and night produce wonders..captivating in all aspects.The readers should not misunderstand this as some sort of ancent tribal,primitive.aboriginal ritual or festival.

The song sung at the end of the festival Velakali is nothing but Kundalini Yoga and highest philosophy coached in simple Malayalam similies etc.Those who participate in this endeavour are all highly eduacted..no distinction of caste or religion.The local Christians mingle and cooperate in everything there..The DEVI Godess idol is an elegant lady looking at the mirror held in her hand.Perhaps she is asking all of us to look into ourselves to know the truth..This Padayani Mirror shows you the unique culture of Kerala handed down from generation to generation through centuries,inculcating all that is truth,goodness and beauty..SathyamShivam,Sundaram..Here we Neelamperoor brothers and sisters invite you all to our Padayani event.We solicit your Blessings and cooperation to make it a roaring success.

2010's Festival on September 8

This year padayani celebrating on September 8, 2010. Neelamperoor villagers are preparing for the planning of great cultural event of kerala.

Padayani begins at 10 p.m on the avittam day ( very next day of thiruvonam) with prayers. Flames are received from the priest. With this flames devotees set fire to the bundles of coconut leaves. With these bundles in hand they move to the monument of Cheraman perumal at the western side. After receiving his symbolic sanction, they start padayani. This continues for the first four days. The next four days are characterised by Kudapadayani which consists of floral decorations on umbrella-shapes made from the stems of coconut leaves. From the eighth day to twelveth effigies made out of green leaves of jackfruit trees are offered. The effigies displayed for the twelveth day are made of the fibrous stem of plantains or slender leaves of coconut stems. The last two days are characterised by the display of swans (Annams) which are made of plantain stems and slender leaves of coconut trees with floral decorations. The highlight of the days is ofcourse the offering of the big swan to propitiate the deity.

On the final day a smith breaks a coconut and turns it round. On the basis of this he makes some predictions. The temple closes at 10 P.M and then starts what is known as Kudampooja. The padayani is characterised by Thothakali, a rhythmic dance in accordance with songs from the folklore and the beating of the drums. Devotees arrange themselves round the big fire at the centre twirling small clothes in an artistic pattern and dance. Spectators from different parts of the country throng to the place to see this rare artistic form. The most spectacular of all is the display of the BIG SWAN which is about 45 feet high. Other swans and fully decorated effigies enhance the beauty of the seen.

When the padayani is over, people disperse in different directions. The gurusi offered by a specially chosen devotee who has undergone austeries for several days with penance and meditation.

Thus POORAM PADAYANI in Bhagavathy temple is quite a fascinating festival which has been attracted by research scholars from different parts of the country.
